Every year, Daytona Beach Florida is alive with the roar of motorcycles rolling into town for the annual Bike Week. The event draws motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world and has been deemed “where the sea meets the sky” due to its sandy beaches and sun.

The history of Bike Week goes back to 1947 when a group of local motorcycle enthusiasts decided to take a trip to Daytona Beach in honor of Memorial Day. They wanted to ride their bikes from then end of Route A1A at Ormond-by-the Sea down to Palm Avenue in Daytona Beach, a distance of approximately 30 miles, as an expression of freedom. They labeled this trip “Bike Night” and would make it an annual event on Memorial Day weekend.

They encouraged others to ride their bikes into Daytona Beach for Bike Week as well and began supporting the event in its infancy.

With the Chamber’s involvement, Bike Week grew from just a small group of motorcyclists taking a trip one weekend a year into a multi-million dollar event that attracts close to half a million motorcyclists every year.

Rising gas prices may be a cause for concern, but attendees can rest assured that they will always find a place to get gas during Daytona Bike Week since there are multiple gas stations within walking distance of Daytona International Speedway.

Gas prices are on the rise again, and this year Daytona Bike Week is celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The event will be taking place during the week of March 7-14, 2009. This year’s Bike Week will be bigger than ever with attendance expected to top one million people over the course of nine days. Because Bike Week draws so many visitors, there has been a need for additional gas stations in the area.

Recently, Daytona International Speedway announced that they will build a new 1,800-space parking garage, which will also house several new gas pumps. The parking garage is expected to be completed before Daytona Bike Week, which means that the local businesses should have no trouble keeping up with high demand for gas.

Also, there are several gas stations within walking distance of Daytona International Speedway. One station is located directly across from the Speedway near the intersection of Williamson Blvd and Beach Street. These two filling stations offer some of the lowest prices in the Daytona Beach area.

It is a Laguna Seca road course that features a 13-turn, 2.3-mile layout that includes a bridge crossing over the Halifax River.
